In this video for our watercolor milky way painting we have a 29.7 x 42 cm (11"3/4 x 16"1/2) sheet that is recommended for tempera and gouache. The paper sheet is evenly split into 2 equal parts as on the left side we will create our sunset landscape and on the right side a night landscape picturing the milky-way over the horizon line of a pine forest. - Masking tape - to get those clean sharp edges. The one in this watercolor tutorial is transparent but you can go for any color you want. Start by applying a thin layer of water onto the paper to get a glossy coating. If you drop too much water just dab a napkin to absorb the excess liquid. Step 2 – Painting the background – the starry night sky To create the starry sky (that will serve as background behind the Milky Way and the pine tree forest) in your watercolor painting you start from the top margin, with a purple-pink color and fade it downwards. Take a large brush, dampen it with water and continue to fade the color down around the lateral margins, leaving the middle area as clean as possible. Come back with the thin brush and apply a new layer of purple-pink, just a little bit lighter than the initial one. Continue to keep the center area close to white. At the bottom of the page start to paint a bright yellow shade and fade it upwards. To darken the background apply a purple layer on top, leaving again the middle part as light as possible. When applying the paint use circular strokes to get a cloudy looking texture. Switch again to the large brush, dampen it, and go over the entire background blending the colors together. We are going for a darker look so add one more layer, this time using a dark blue shade. Repeat the same process as before. Step 3 – Painting the galaxy – how to draw the Milky Way Start off with light purple and draw a few irregular shapes in the center area of the painting, in a diagonal angle. Repeat the process with a pink-reddish shade and then a dark blue one. While the center piece dries up, you can come back to the background and continue to darken it. Once dry, you can move in and blend the details of the Milky Way. Use a thin damp brush and apply soft strokes around the edges of each small shape, using circular movements. With a darker version of the pink-reddish color used earlier, apply a few thin strokes in and around your Milky Way and blend these in. Next apply a new layer of shapes, with an even darker blue and dark purple. Make sure to leave also some close to white areas in the Milky Way. Add a few dark red spots and blend in. After this repeat with white color this time. With a damp brush blend the edges of the Milky Way with the surrounding background. Repeat several times both darkening the area around the Milky Way and adding more details to it. Use different shades of blue, purple, white and red, lighter and darker. Darken also the bottom area of the background with a warm yellow color. If you feel it`s too bright you can soften it by diluting with some water and white color. Step 4 – Painting stars surrounding the galaxy To create the starry night sky load some white color on a brush, hold it above your painting and use another brush to hit it. Repeat this over the entire top half of the painting. As the bottom half looks "dusty" we are going to give it a warmer feel with some orange Step 5 – Painting the pine tree forest Last we are creating the pine tree forest that will fade into the horizon. First layer of pine trees will be bright orange. This will help us to achieve that fading effect. There will be several layers of trees, each one darker than the previous. For this apply green color gradually into the orange one, increasing the quantity with each layer. For the last set of trees add also a very tiny bit of black. Last step is to peel off the masking tape and unveil those clean sharp edges of you brand new watercolor galaxy painting. *** Be sure to subscribe for more how to painting tutorials ► http://bit.ly/SUBSCRIBE_DreamfulCanvas SAY HELLO: Facebook ►https://www.facebook.com/dreamfulcanvas/ Instagram ►https://www.instagram.com/dreamful_canvas/ Music: www.bensound.com #galaxypainting #watercolorpainting #paintingtutorial #milkywaypainting #paintingideas
